Determinants of farmers’ adaptation to climate change: A micro level analysis in Ghana Scientia Agricola
Ndamani,Francis; Watanabe,Tsunemi.
ABSTRACT This study analyzed socio-economic factors that influence farmers’ adaptation to climate change in agriculture. Perceptions regarding long-term changes in climate variables and the rate of occurrence of weather extremes were also investigated. Additionally, farmers’ perceived barriers to the use of adaptation practices were identified and ranked. A total of 100 farm-households were randomly selected from four communities in the Lawra district of Ghana and data were collected through semi-structured questionnaires, focused group discussions and field observations. A logistic regression model and weighted average index were used to analyze the data. The results showed that 87 % of respondents perceived a decrease in rainfall amount, while 82 %...

Modelling the fishing costs of French commercial vessels in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Daures, Fabienne; Trenkel, Verena; Guyader, Olivier.
Ten years after the start of the European Data Collection Framework the availability of cost indicators for assessing the economic status of fisheries or bio-economic modelling is still deficient. Moreover, economic time series are difficult to maintain due to fishermen weariness and sample coverage is often insufficient. To overcome these problems, the paper builds predictive models per operational cost category (fuel, landing, other variable, fixed, salary and total) for the French Bay of Biscay fleet. The cost models had good fit and stressed the key role of gear and vessel size (length mostly) for explaining fishing costs. They suggested that only a small list of variables was needed to predict costs (days-at-sea, total revenue, vessel age, length and...

Monitoring regional economies in Australia: why and how AgEcon
Chapman, Paul; Coelho, Bruno.
Economic activity is inherently variable and monitoring it is a major challenge, especially in regional economies where resources are fewer and activity is more variable. Using a recent study of the Riverland region, the authors set out the information available, its limitations and means by which it may be extended. It is argued that monitoring must respond to specific needs and extend to information beyond the scope of the merely economic. It is not simply a matter of tracking commonly used economic variables but of understanding specific economic challenges and using that understanding to target economic and social information.

Socio-economic Profiles of Nutrition Label Users AgEcon
Zhang, Ge; You, Wen; Nayga, Rodolfo M., Jr..
This paper aims to explore the socio-economic profiles of the nutrition label users and focuses on seven key nutrients: calories, calories from fat, total fat, trans fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium. The data are from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2006 and Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals (CSFII) 1994-96. Similar conclusions are drawn from both data sets: those consumers who are older, better educated, higher income, female, and have higher nutrition knowledge will have higher probability to use nutrition labels; those consumers who are in larger size families and being either Hispanic or black have lower probability of using nutrition labels.

Spatio-Temporal Modeling of Wildfire Risks in the U.S. Forest Sector AgEcon
Chen, Xuan; Goodwin, Barry K..
In the US forestry industry, wildfire has always been one of the leading causes of damage. This topic is of growing interest as wildfire has caused huge losses for landowners, residents and governments in recent years. While individual wildfire behavior is well studied (e.g. Butry 2009; Holmes 2010), a lot of new literature on broadscale wildfire risks (e.g. by county) is emerging (e.g. Butry et al. 2001; Prestemon et al. 2002). The papers of the latter category have provided useful suggestions for government wildfire management and policies. Although wildfire insurance for real estate owners is popular, the possibility to develop a forestry production insurance scheme accounting for wildfire risks has not yet been investigated. The purpose of our paper is...
